When creating the entire world from scratch, sound design is crucial. Details that might seem obvious can go completely unnoticed without an accompanying sound effect, like the whoosh of an arrow striking a barrel, or a “Baa” from a sheep as it scampers out of frame…

Another crucial element to this short is the precision of its reveals. There are several moments where the curtain is literally lifted for the audience to peak behind. The most impactful is near the finale, when Nigel comments “It’s not like anyone’s going to actually remember the Siege of Scatford!” which is contradicted by the fact that he is inside the page of a historic manuscript. Clearly this siege WILL be remembered.

The main comedic fuel for this scene comes from Lord Ashton complaining about his rotten luck to someone whose luck is FAR worse. Every comedic beat stems from Ashtons egotistical Naivete juxtaposed against the very real danger his subjects face. One way we heighten this is after Ashton says “I wish I could just stretch my legs!” we cut to a wide shot showing Nigel’s knees chattering about under his weight.
